West Kennet Long Barrow twilight lantern visit

After supper at camp we walk towards West Kennet Long Barrow as the light goes. Battery lanterns mark the approach while your guide tells the story of the people connected with this ancient place. The visit stays outdoors, is flame-free, and follows site opening and heritage rules.

How the evening runs

20:15Meet at the camp at The Barge Inn after supper; short minibus hop to the Kennet lay-by.
20:45Walk up the chalk track to the barrow — about 12 minutes, uphill across a field.
21:00Flame-free lantern storytelling from the permitted visitor area.
21:45Quiet time near the barrow, with the Marlborough Downs going dark around you.
22:15Walk back down and return to camp for around 22:45.

Getting there & accessibility

The approach is a 700 m chalk and grass track with a steady uphill gradient and no lighting; it is uneven and can be slippery.
The experience remains outdoors; entry into the chambers is not part of the evening visit.
Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, and difficult for anyone unsteady on rough ground in the dark.
If walking the track is not for you, tell us and a guide will stay with you at the foot of the field, where the storytelling is repeated before the group goes up.
Riders aged 14 and 15 come with their parent or guardian, as on the ride itself.

Weather & cancellation

It runs in most weather — rain, wind and cold are all part of it.
We cancel only for lightning, high winds or ground conditions the guide judges unsafe in the dark.
If we cancel, the £65 a rider is refunded in full, or moved to another date if you are staying on.
From November to February the walk is fully dark from the start; in June it stays half-light until nearly eleven.

What to bring

Warm layers and a hat — you sit still for a while and the chalk gives up its heat quickly
Waterproof jacket
Sturdy shoes or boots with grip, not sandals
Your own head torch if you prefer one (we lend them out too)
A small mat or cushion if you would rather not sit on cold stone

Places are limited and dates require heritage and landowner permission, so the visit only appears when it can run lawfully and safely.

The oldest commute in Britain.

There is a particular hour on this ride — late afternoon, somewhere between Silbury Hill and the beech hangers of West Woods — when the chalk goes the colour of warm bread and the whole vale below drops into shadow. Farmers still cut the same field edges their grandfathers cut. The drove roads we ride were worn by cattle, packhorses and shepherds long before tarmac, and they have never really stopped being roads.

Avebury in the 1930s was a village slowly rediscovering the stone circle it had been living inside for centuries: Alexander Keiller re-erected the buried sarsens, marking lost ones with concrete posts you can still count today. Before that, people quarried stones for barn footings and cottage walls. Ride through the henge and you pass gateposts and doorsteps that were once part of the circle.

Our route strings these places together the slow way, on byways and bridleways rather than main roads, so the monuments arrive in the order the land gives them. The e-bikes simply mean the hills stop being the point. You spend your energy looking instead.

Good to know

Avebury, Silbury Hill and the Kennet barrows sit within the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site.
Avebury village, its stones and West Kennet Long Barrow are free to visit at any reasonable hour; the museum and car park are National Trust.
Silbury Hill may not be climbed — the mound is fragile and the ban is enforced.
